I learned that cheese curds are a popular Midwestern delicacy. They can be eaten straight, breaded or deep-fried. I opted to try the fried type, since I figured if I were going to eat a chunk of cheese, it might as well be fried. According to native Wisconsin-ians, fresh curds squeek against the teeth when bitten into, due to air trapped inside. This is apparently their defining characteristic. Let's just say, I'm glad they aren't popular where I am from, otherwise I might be obese.
I learned how to start a bonfire, and that the smoke from a bonfire can make your eyes tear up pretty badly. Although most people might have already known this, it was new and exciting information for me.
I learned that beer cheese dip is just as delicious as it sounds. And so is the sourdough bread bowl that it comes in.
I learned how to make fresh, crisp nachos from corn tortillas.
I learned the definition of the word, "coastie" and that according to Wisconsin natives, I am in fact one. A coastie is a term used in the Midwest to denote young people that come from outside the region, mainly from the East or West coast. Coastie fashion typically consists of items such as Ugg boots, North face jackets, plain black leggings, V-neck tshirts and oversized sunglasses. I unfortunately fell victim to two of those items. Next time I go to Wisconsin, I'll leave my leggings and V-necks at home.
I learned how to play shuffleboard (or our own unique version).
I learned that packing just a t-shirt, toothbrush and toothpaste for a two day trip is more than enough.
I learned that Schlitz and Blatz are both affordable and decently tasty.
I learned that chorizo sausage is delicious...even when combined into an egg omelette.
And I learned that random, two day bus trips, thrown together last minute, with great company and friendly Couchsurfing hosts, can be a ton of fun.
